Welcome to my engineering portfolio -- the comprehensive design blog since my first year!

I'm a Master's student at Boston University and hoping to dive into the world of technology and design. Science is and has always been my first love. Yet, having never taken a formal "engineering" course before college, I was not entirely sure how or where my passion flowed. So, I set forth to take an engineering class my first semester and then continued with coursework towards the Wellesley-Olin Certificate of Engineering, until I made my way into BU's accelerated program for Liberal Arts students (called LEAP).

My goals for my own education and your experience in reading these posts are strengthening my:
  • Capacity to create and think like an engineer and designer
  • Understanding of the relationship between humans and their "stuff"
  • Purpose for all of this growing knowledge
Engineering is at my heart -- and so is having societal impact. I was and still am determined to hone in on my passions, and I'm re-discovering the joy of 'tinkering.' I hope that my own enjoyment pushes you, as well, to engage in your own creativist.

Laser-Cut Bottle Opener (3 of 3)

3rd Design: With limited time and a failed second iteration , my partner and I hoped to resolve the dimensions issues and modify the design. A few things we noted: -- The lamp pole wasn't the best handle. We needed some sort of curve to aid grabbing the bottle opener. -- The arms were too weak and tiny but we liked the idea of a similar lift; maybe we needed a larger hook and another point of leverage. -- The base of the lamp (the bottom opening) appeared that it would work if it had been printed to scale. So we wouldn't mess with that portion of the design. We returned to SolidWorks and modified our design, by eliminating the bottom arm and forming a more exaggerated upper arm/hook. We added a little bump on the pole to make a better handle (similar to the curves on the first design -- the "Bottle" bottle opener). Truss Design 02

The second part of the final project for EK301 (Mechanics) consists of a preliminary design -- or, rather, several preliminary designs and one identified draft. Having the data from the straw lab test and the resultant code to determine the approximate load that a straw can hold based on its length, it took quite a bit of creativity to find the perfect combination of straws. However, to simplify this process, the class was instructed to use a MATLAB code that would take a design and then indicate which member of the truss would fail first. It is important to note that all designs were given the same parameters: Figure: One of two designs selected The truss must be a single, planar, simple truss.  Members must be joined concurrently at joints using the provided pins and double pinned to the guest plates.  Gusset plates may be any geometry but must have an area of less than 16 sq. cm. Introduction to My Product

Again, welcome to my design blog! To read a little more about who I am and my goals, check out About Me . Here is a brief summary: I am a first year at Wellesley College I hope to become an engineer and pursue my interest in energy development I am also interested in economics and want to learn how to apply energy technology to economic systems I am still learning about myself... Two central goals I have for this class is 1) to enhance my creativity as an engineer and 2) to gain a better understanding of my engineer style.
